Mercadona invests €24.5 million in new ship at Póvoa do Varzim logistics block

Mercadona has invested €24.5 million to expand the storage capacity of the Póvoa de Varzim Logistics Block with a new 12,000 square metre facility dedicated to fruit and vegetables and the management area for reusable and single-use boxes, the Spanish chain announced on Tuesday.

The project, on a 50,000 square metre (m2) site adjacent to the logistics hub that supported the group’s entry into the country from the north, “responds to the evolution of the company’s expansion project in Portugal”, Mercadona said in a statement.

In addition, the area where the new warehouse is located has 17,000 m2 of green areas and 100 parking spaces. Two of them are dedicated to charging electric vehicles. Mercadona invested €60 million in the Póvoa de Varzim Logistics Block in 2019, which consists of two warehouses. The company has already invested a total of €84.5 million in the logistics platform, which now has three warehouses with a total area of 100,000 square metres.
